This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
DAYTONA 500 WEEKEND
Ladies and Gentlemen, start your radios! We'll have 2 hours of the best American music all about cars. Along with stories of course, like the one about the Pace Car that went up in flames on the track...
Racing in Daytona began in 1902 on "The World's Most Famous Beach".
The hard-packed sand made it perfect for driving.
DAYTONA PACE CARS - Above is the 2023 Daytona Pace Car, a Corvette Z06 Hardtop Convertible. It was driven by NBA guard Tyrese Haliburton, who plays for the Indiana Pacers. The team was named in 1967 after the pace cars of the Daytona 500. Probably the most infamous pace car was the Chevy SS that caught fire due to a wiring short in 2014.

FEVER - Mark opened set 2 with this Raider ballad. It holds the distinction of being the only Raider song produced at different times by Bruce Johnston (9/24/64) AND Terry Melcher (5/6/65). The Johnston production was hiding in the Columbia vaults until Bob Irwin discovered it in 2000 and released it on the 2-CD set MOJO WORKOUT on Sundazed. The Raiders at that time were Mark and Paul, Smitty, Drake Levin, and Mike Holladay.
The Melcher production is what you heard on the Raiders' first Columbia album, HERE THEY COME!, and featured a change of bass players from Holladay to Phil Volk.
You can compare the versions below to hear the difference between producers and bass players. also, Mark had a vocal cord nodule in late 1964, but it was successfully removed before trhe second recording.

LITTLE GIRL IN THE FOURTH ROW - Mark told the story of how he came to sing the foreign language versions of some Raider songs. He played the Italian version of LGITFR in the final set.
