This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
Days & Nights
This weekend in 1964, The Beatles started filming A Hard Day's Night. We'll celebrate the iconic film on today's show, with two hours of the best American music.
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT - Mark opened the show with Doug Fieger and The Knack, who performed the song at Carnegie Hall in 1979. Mark discussed the band's "connection" with The Beatles and A Hard Day's Night, and told the story of all the labels competing to sign them. As head of A&R, Mark represented one of those lables, United Artists. Doug and Mark remained good friends until Doug's untimely passing in 2010. Here's a great interview with him.

RIDE THE NIGHT AWAY - Mark closed the first set with a version of the Jimmy Barnes song by Little Steven with his Disciples of Soul. Here are BOTH artists performing the song live in Australia.

WEDNESDAY'S CHILD - Mark played this song from his favorite album, COLLAGE, and told the story of writing it with Keith Allison and his wife Judy, as well as getting a visit from LAPD during the sessions.

NIGHT OF THE SADIST - Mark closed Set 4 with this cult classic song from Fort Worth's Larry & The Blue Notes, and told the story of how the producer got cold feet at the last minute. He had the band overdub "phantom" instead of "sadist", fearing that the original version would get them banned from airplay. (Of course, that probably would have made it a BIG hit!) Here are both versions - pick your fave.

SALAD DAYS - Mark closed Set 5 with this tune from his pals The Grip Weeds, and told the story of how the band's name came from ANOTHER Richard Lester movie. The song is available on the HOUSE OF VIBES REVISITED album, available HERE.

1001 ARABIAN NIGHTS - Mark closed the final set with this song from the Raiders' SPIRIT OF '67 album, and told the story about how he came to write it. the CD is out of print, but we have a handful left....available HERE, personally autographed to you.
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT came out right after the Raiders moved to Hollywood, and Mark, Paul, "Doc", Smitty, and Drake went to see it together. Mark says they all loved it, and realized they needed to up their game. That was the only time Mark saw it in the theatre, but the DVD is frequently showing chez Lindsay. Info on the DVD is HERE.
