This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
SHOW #100
In May 2022, I got a call from Stevie Van Zandt, asking if I'd be interested in hosting a new show in his Underground Garage. I was excited to say YES, since I'd enjoyed doing my shows in Portland on KISN and then on the CBS affiliate
K-HITS. SVZ gave me time to "find my groove", and here we are, a hundred shws later. But none of it would have been possible without the help of everyone in The Underground Garage HQ, or YOU. Thanks for tuning in every week!
GOOD THING - The song is one of Mark Lindsay's proudest accomplishments, and he was honored to have it be included in Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (along with 3 other Raider tunes, 2 of which he wrote). And he was completely shocked when he heard the very first promotion for the movie, featuring that song. Mark wrote the song with Terry Melcher on the piano at the Cielo Drive home they shared. (It had to be the swingin'-est bachelor pad in The Hollywood Hills at the time!) And QT found the actual, original piano to use in the film.
Seen the movie? Got the DVD? BUT have you read the book? Hardcover pictured...details HERE. There's more back story to the characters, and it's a great read.

JUST LIKE THAT - Mark closed the first set with this tune from DIon, a duet with Joanne Shaw Taylor, from his 2024 Girl Friends album. Mark was lucky enough to interview Dion on AMERICAN REVOLUTION earlier this year when he released the first single from that album.. Details HERE.

HEY POCKY A-WAY - Mark opened the second set with his favorite Meters song, and told the story of how New Orleans music influenced the early Raiders' sound. Below, check out The Neville Brothers performing the song live.
It's available on The Meters' 6-CD import set (Mark just ordered HIS copy!)...more details HERE. The set also includes RIDE YOUR PONY, which the Raiders covered in 1966.

WHAT YOU DESERVE - Mark loves the music of The Jellybricks, and he ended the second set with this tune.
Do you listen to Coolest Conversations with The Mighty Manfred on Friday afternoons in The Underground Garage? Don't worry, they're also archived as podcasts and available wherever you listen to those. You can catch the one with Larry Kennedy from The Jellybricks HERE.

AMERICAN WOMAN - Mark opened the third set with one of his favorite songs, and the version by Lenny Kravitz from the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me movie.
Mark's favorite version isn't actually the original by The Guess Who...it's the version on the 2007 Bachman-Cummings JUKEBOX CD....more details HERE. BTW, the CD also has an especially killer version of Edwin Starr's Agent Double-0-Soul.

JOLENE - In the same set, Mark played his favorite version of this Dolly Parton classic, an incredible version from ZouZou Mansour from the band Soraia.

RockNRoll Rebel - Mark paid homage to his Boss, SVZ, by opening the fourth set with this song. Here he is performing it live last year with The Disciples of Soul.

TIGHTER - Mark closed the fifth set with this Raider tune, and told the story of how he and Terry Melcher wrote the song, another one that came from the wonderful piano at Cielo.

TIGHTER is on the REVOLUTION album, and we have just 10 copies remaining of the limited edition of 30 of these import expanded edition CDs with bonus tracks. They're numbered and personalized to YOU by Mark. Available HERE.
It's also the second track on a new import 3-CD set called I SEE YOU LIVE ON LOVE STREET: MUSIC FROM LAUREL CANYON. The rest of the songs in the compilation are definitely more folk-rock, but the liner note booklet features a clip from 16 Magazine and details that Mark posted on his Facebook page about the house on Wonderland Drive that he and Paul rented for their secretary...and later, how bad things came to pass there. The CD set details are HERE. |
LOVE IS STRANGE - Mark closed the show with this duet he recorded with Susan Cowsill, recorded in 2016 at House of Vibes in New Jersey, and the title track from the CD. It's available here as a Digipak, with a separate fold out card depicting the cover art, and signed by both Mark AND Susan. Mark will personalize the card to you HERE.
There's also a nice feature in the current issue of TAPE OP Magazine about the studio and its owner, Kurt Reil from The Grip Weeds, where he also talks about recording with Mark. You can read the interview HERE.
