This Week's
"DEEP DIVE"
THE DAILY NEWS
This week's hot topic in the news is...the news itself! So Mark Lindsay will bring you "All The Music That'S Fit To Play" - two hours of
the best American music...all about The Media.
Teenagers had their own version of a gossip column in the 60s - written by none other than 16 Magazine's editor, Gloria Stavers. It was first called GeeGee's New York Buzz, later changed to GeeGee's Gossip. For the most part, it was just full of snippets of benign scoops that Gloria had gotten, but she could also wield her sword with it.
When Paul Revere refused to do a benefit concert for Gwen Channel's dying wish to fund a machine to help detect cancer - that's the Gwen that Gloria had taken under her wing in Gwen's final days, and arranged for her to "win" a trip to New York to spend a day sightseeing with Mark - Gloria ran a piece in the gossip column hinting that she knew about an affair he was having and showing him how she COULD expose him - he suddenly came around, and The Raiders did the concert.

Of course, this week is full of media attention on the "checkbook journalism" of the National Enquirer, and during this week's show, Mark talks about HIS encounter with that aspect of the publication. Below, you can see a couple of 1982 TV ads for the publication.

TOO MUCH TALK - The first set kicked off with this 1968 Raider hit - well, actually, the longer album version with a slower bridge. Mark Lindsay wrote the song after reading a morning edition of the Los Angeles Times, and it was the first song he produced on the Raiders, if you don't count his earlier, un-credited production of SS396 and Corvair Baby.
Here are the Raiders performing the song on Happening '68.

CENTERFOLD - Mark chose this song just because it fit the "media" theme, but on further reflection, it just might be a nod to a couple of ladies whose lives are being exposed in the news this week...

NATIONAL ENQUIRER - Mark opened the second set with this satirical tune by Dave Rudolf.

READING HER PAPER - Mark played this song by his Columbia Records labelmates, The Cyrkle, in Set 2.

DAILY NEWS - Mark closed the third set with the Tom Paxton's original 1964 version of the song.
When Tom updated the lyrics in a new version recorded in 1970, inflation must have been behind the lyric changing from a cost of seven pennies to eight. Here's a video of Tom singing the second version.

BROKEN RADIO - Mark played this song from his VIDEO DREAMS project in the fourth set. We have less than 50 copies left, and it's available HERE, personally autographed to you.

THE NEWS - Mark closed the show with this plea for a more humane news media, from Hawaiian artist, surfer, and environmental activist Jack Johnson.
